Movie Trailer Round-up: November 3, 2023

Hey Cinegeeks! It’s Friday again, which means we have a brand-new episode up on the Cinegeeks Podcast for you! This week, we’ll be talking about two movies that’ll surely thrill and chill you - The Piper and Five Nights at Freddy’s. You can listen to the episode by clicking on the Podcast link above.

We’re also going to start a new Friday thing here on the Cinegeeks website, and that’s us posting a round-up of all the new movie trailers that have come out over the past few days. Some of these may already be on your radar, and some you may be seeing/hearing about for the first time. Without any further ado, here are the top new trailers for the week:

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 2024)

Before it got rebooted in 2011, the Planet of the Apes franchise had gone through a roller-coaster ride in terms of quality and critical response. The original 5-film franchise from 1968 to 1973 was a case of diminishing returns (one could say that it already peaked with the first entry), and the 2001 entry was dead on arrival. However, the recent reboot trilogy helmed by Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, The Batman) brought out what this franchise truly was about - a desperate tug-of-war between two dominant species for the future of Earth. Now, a new trailer has come out for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - a tale set many generations after the reign of Caesar (played by the fantastic Andy Serkis). This looks to be more in line with the original 1968 entry, as we see the titular apes already speaking fluent English and having established territories for all of the different subspecies. See the first teaser trailer above.

The Fall Guy (March 2024)

Ryan Gosling has low-key become one of Hollywood’s most dependable actors, always reliable to give a performance that can definitely steal any show he’s in (see: Barbie). Now, he’s set to play the lead in The Fall Guy, an action-comedy that’s an adaptation of the 1980’s Lee Majors action/adventure TV series of the same name. He plays Colt, a stuntman who’s tasked with looking for the star of a movie being directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt. Known at the start of his career for his romantic drama and rom-com roles, Gosling has evolved into a fantastic comedic thespian thanks to his deadpan delivery and willingness to dive into physical comedy when needed. The Fall Guy looks to be another smash hit added to his impressive resume. The film is directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Bullet Train), one-half of the minds that brought us the original John Wick film. That being said, not only is this priming up to be a fantastic comedy but also a kick-ass action flick as well. See the new trailer above.

The Killer (Nov 10, 2023 on Netflix)

David Fincher’s filmography has long been celebrated for his terrific deconstruction of the mind of troubled men who think they have the world all figured out. Films like Fight Club, Zodiac, and The Social Network (to name a few) come to mind. Now, he teams up with Michael Fassbender for what looks to be another slam-dunk in The Killer. When a hitman’s (Fassbender) job goes awry, he goes on an international pursuit against his employers that he insists is nothing personal. The always-reliable Michael Fassbender makes a triumphant comeback to filmmaking after an extended personal break with this and Next Goal Wins (directed by the idiosyncratic Taika Waititi). Specializing in roles that deal with flawed individuals of steely resolve, it seems like he’s finally found the perfect director in Fincher to guide him. This looks not just to be a great thriller but also a possible contender come Awards Season 2024. See the trailer above.

Maestro (December 20, 2023 on Netflix)

Originally known for being a roguish leading man type, Bradley Cooper has, in the past few years, made an astonishing leap towards becoming one of cinema’s most celebrated directors working today. His fantastic directorial debut, the 2018 version of the timeless tale A Star is Born (also starring in it with Lady Gaga), turned many heads into recognizing him as not just a bankable and versatile actor but also a genius behind the lens as well. He continues blazing this trail with his newest directorial effort Maestro, which tells the life of Leonard Bernstein, the American virtuoso of 20th Century Musical Theatre. He enlists Carey Mulligan in portraying Felicia Montealegre, Bernstein’s wife, in a performance that’s already drawing rave reviews since the film premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival last September. This looks to be another feather in Netflix’s cap for Awards Season 2024 and another notch in Cooper’s growing belt as a renowned prestige filmmaker. Watch the trailer above.
